Abstract

1,180,437. Non-corrosive cleaning composition. GEIGY (U.K.) Ltd. 5 July, 1968 [6 July, 1967], No. 31162/67. Addition to 1,081.282. Heading C5D. A composition for cleaning metals comprises a water-soluble phosphate wnich acts as a sequestering agent for calcium ions and, as a tarnish or corrosion inhibitor, bis-benzotriazole of the formula or bis-(benzotriazole-5) methane of the formula or a bis-benzotriazole derivative of the formula where X is a C 1-6 straight chain alkylene substituted by one or two C 1-4 alkyl groups when the alkylene group contains only one carbon, or by one or more C 1-4 alkyl groups when the alkylene contains two or more carbons, or unsubstituted when the alkylene contains two or more carbons; a 1: 1-cycloalkyl residue containing at least 5 carbons; a carbonyl group; a sulphuryl group; an oxygen atom or a sulphur atom. Preferred water-soluble phosphates are the sodium and potassium salts of metaphosphoric acid, disodium, dipotassium, tetrasodium and tetrapotassium salts of pyrophosphoric acid, pentasodium and pentapotassium salts of triphosphoric acid, hexasodium tetraphosphate and hexasodium hexametaphosphate. The composition may also contain a surface-active agent which may be (a) anion, preferably of the formula ROSO 3 M, wherein R is an aliphatic hydrocarbon group and M is an alkali metal or ammonium radical; (b) non-ionic, e.g. polyalkylene glycol derivatives of long-chain fatty amines; or (c) cationic, e.g. an alkyl pyridinium halide.
