Abstract
Aluminium and aluminium alloy parts are coated with tin by immersion in an aqueous solution of alkali metal stannate and alkali metal polyphosphate. Suitable stannates are sodium and potassium stannate. Specified polyphosphates are sodium and potassium tripolyphosphate, hexametaphosphate and pyrophosphate. Dry stannate/polyphosphate compositions which are suitable for preparing new tinning solutions or for replenishment purposes are disclosed. In Example 1, a piston made of a cast aluminium-silicon-copper alloy is cleaned, prior to tinning, by immersion in a solution comprising sodium-metasilicate, -tripolyphosphate, -bicarbonate and -lignosulphate, together with a surface-active agent.
