Abstract

1,197,501. Colour anodizing of aluminium and its alloys. PECHINEY COMPAGNIE DE PRODUITS CHIMIQUES ET ELECTROMETALLURGIQUES. July 13, 1967 [July 13, 1966], No.32350/67. Heading C7B. Coloured oxide layers are formed on aluminium or aluminium base alloys by anodization in an aqueous solution comprising sulphuric acid; 2- naphthol-6:8-disulphonic acid, 2-naphthol-3:6- disulphonic acid, 1:8-dihydroxynaphthalene-3:6- disulphonic acid, or 1-naphthol-8-amino-3:6- disulphonic acid or an alkali metal salt of such an acid; and an acryclic aliphatic saturated mono- or di-carboxylic acid or ethylenically unsaturated dicarboxylic acid, none of which contains more than 5 C atoms. Preferred aliphatic acids are acetic, propionic, oxalic succinic, maleic, citraconic, and itaconic acids. For commercial, e.g. 99À5% Al and alloys containing small amounts of Mg and Si the colour obtained is generally bronze, different shades being obtained by varying the current density, bath temperature and duration of anodization. With alloys containing Mg and Mn with or without Si black coatings are obtained, while a brown coating is obtained with an Al-3% Mg alloy. Prior to anodizing, the aluminium or alloy is degreased, optionally polished, pickled in aqueous caustic soda, and rinsed successively in water, dilute nitric acid and water. After anodizing, sealing is effected in boiling nickel acetate solution.
