Abstract

1,195,926. Compounding hydrocarbon rubber with silica. O. W. BURKE. 8 May, 1968, No. 21784/68. Heading C3P. 100 parts by weight of a sulphur -vulcanizable hydrocarbon rubber are compounded with (i) 5 to 80 parts by weight of silica prepared by reacting aqueous sodium silicate with carbon dioxide followed by treatment with sulphuric acid or aluminium sulphate to a pH below 5 and drying, (ii) 1 to 10 parts by weight of magnesium oxide, (iii) 0.5 to 10 parts by weight of zinc oxide, and (iv) 0.3 to 5 parts by weight of an alkanolamine of formula wherein x, y and z are each-H, -RH, -ROH, or -ROROH, wherein R is a C 2-18 alkylene group and at least one of x, y, z is an -ROH or -ROROH group. The composition may also contain 0.5 to 3 parts by weight of N,N<SP>1</SP>-di-otolyl guanidine as well as traditional curatives, anti-oxidants, '&c.
