Abstract

Small quantities of nickel are precipitated from aqueous inorganic cobalt salt solutions, e.g. chloride or sulphate, by adding metallic iron and a sulphide of tin or bismuth to the solution. Preferably the sulphide is added in an amount equivalent to the nickel in the solution, and the iron is powdered and in a soft annealed state. The temperature during the precipitation may be from room temperature to 90 DEG C., and the pH is preferably adjusted to below 7, especially between 4 and 5.5, by the addition of a dilute acid. The sulphide may be added as an aqueous suspension or paste, or it may be formed in situ. Specifications 650,595, 655,149 and 683,679 are referred to.
