Abstract

Metals between cadmium and silver in the electromotive series and capable of forming gas reducible complexes with ammonia in solution are precipitated from solution containing such complex ion by treatment with a non-sulphidising reducing gas at elevated temperature and pressure, reduction being initiated in the presence of 0,5-150 ml. of metal powder per litre of the solution. In order to produce the complex ion in solution there may be added ammonia, ammonium sulphate, sulphuric acid or a mixture of these, the solution containing an ammonium salt of the anion present. The metal powder added is preferably the same metal as that to be precipitated and should be finer than 20 mesh, preferably finer than 150 mesh. The solution should be agitated during reduction to keep substantially all the powder in suspension.
