Abstract
The dissolution rate of nickel powder in aqueous sulphamic acid to produce nickel sulphamate is accelerated by feeding substantially pure oxygen (i.e. oxygen containing up to 10% air or other non-oxidizing gases) into a suspension of nickel powder in an aqueous sulphamic acid solution while maintaining the pH of the solution below 5. The pH of the solution may be maintained, preferably in the range 1.5 to 2.5, by controlling the rate of addition of sulphamic acid to the suspension. The amount of sulphamic acid added may be controlled so that it does not exceed the stoichiometric amount required to combine with the nickel in suspension, preferably the amount of nickel present is up to five times the stoichiometric amount required to combine with available sulphamic acid. The nickel powder may be finely divided and may be obtained by hydrogen reduction from aqueous media. When substantially all the free sulphamic acid has reacted the nickel sulphamate is separated from undissolved nickel particles and may be subjected to further oxygenation to remove iron contamination by precipitation of dissolved iron.
