Abstract

At least one property of a body of glass, vitrocrystalline material or ceramic is modified by contacting the body with a material containing or consisting of a molten nitrate salt, at least in part while the material is in contact with CO 2 gas in a quantity sufficient to promote ion diffusion from the salt to the body. The treatment may form part of an ion-exchange treatment, e.g. exchange of alkali-metal ions. The CO 2 , which may be mixed with N 2 or air, may be bubbled through a bath of molten nitrate or streamed against the glass with streams of molten nitrate. The CO 2 is preferably used in an amount of at least 0À1 litre/min./m.<SP>3</SP> of salt. The ion diffusion may be enhanced by an electric field. Specification 1,274,732 is referred to.
