Abstract
1525873 Microporous silicate glass CORNING GLASS WORKS 3 June 1976 [4 June 1975] 22949/76 Heading C1M A microporous silicate glass body is produced by:- (A) altering the composition of a hydrosilicate glass comprising, by weight, 10-60% Na 2 O and/or K 2 0, 40-90% SiO 2 (Na 2 O+K 2 O+siO 2 being at least 75%) and 5-50% H 2 0, all percentages being based on anhydrous glass, by at least one of the following treatments:- (a) contact with an aqueous solution of NH 4 OH or ammonium salt to exchange H<SP>+</SP> ions for Na<SP>+</SP> or K<SP>+</SP> ions from the glass; (b) contact with an aqueous K or Na salt solution of pH 8-10À5 and including at least 30 gm/litre of salt, to exchange H<SP>+</SP> for Na<SP>+</SP> or K + ions of the glass; (c) contact with an aqueous solution of NH 4 OH or ammonium salt also containing metal cations to cause exchange of H<SP>+</SP> or cations for Na<SP>+</SP> or K+ together with sorption of the metal ions; and/or (d) contact with a salt solution of pH 4-12 and including 30-500 gm/litre of a metal salt, to cause exchange of H<SP>+</SP> or cations for Na<SP>+</SP> or K<SP>+</SP> ions from the glass together with sorption; (B) terminating the treatment; and (C) drying the glass body.
