Abstract

Lignin and pectin are eliminated from raw bast fibres by (1) heating the fibres in an aqueous solution of the hydroxide, carbonate, bicarbonate or borate of sodium or potassium, (2) rinsing the fibres with water, (3) immersing the fibres in an aqueous solution of hydrogen peroxide or sodium peroxide, an alkale metal chlorite or hypochlorite, or calcium chlorite, and adding a non-oxidizing acid to the solution at such a rate that the chlorine or oxygen evolved combines with the lignin and pectin-containing constituents of the fibres to liberate the fibres, but is not at any time present at a sufficient concentration to attack the fibres. The fibres are finally rinsed with water. The acid used may be hydrochloric acid, acetic acid, formic acid, lactic acid or citric acid.
