Abstract

Cellulose pulp is made from bagasse by treating the bagasse in a closed rotating vessel with steam at 100-125 p.s.i. for 1/2 -1 hr., venting the vessel and treating with alkaline solution under steam pressure at 100-125 p.s.i. for 1/2 -1 hr. The vessel may be vented to atmospheric pressure between the two treatments, or to conserve heat and save time the pressure may be reduced to about 50-60 p.s.i. and the alkaline solution pumped in under pressure. Suitable alkalis are sodium, potassium or calcium hydroxide, preferably 2-3 per cent caustic soda. The pulp may be washed and subject to a single stage hypochlorite bleach.
