Abstract

Yarns, fabrics or garments consisting wholly or partly of wool are treated to reduce their tendency to felt-shrinkage with an aqueous liquid containing a water-soluble bromate and one or more of the following substances: a water-soluble formaldehydesulphoxylate, thiourea, glyoxal, an alkali-metal sulphide, an alkaline-earth metal sulphide, a water-soluble thiocyanate or a water-soluble hydrosulphite, the pH of the liquid being below 3. The treatment may be at between 0 DEG and 100 DEG C. In an example, an all-wool fabric is immersed in an aqueous solution containing potassium bromate, sodium hydrosulphite and hydrochloric acid, after-treated with sodium bisulphite and then neutralized with a solution of ammonia.
