Abstract

Nitrogen-containing macromolecular products insoluble in dilute aqueous ammonia are prepared by reacting polymethylmethacrylate, or a copolymer containing a major proportion of methyl methacrylate units, with aqueous ammonia under pressure at a temperature of 180-300 DEG C. to form products insoluble in dilute ammonia. The aqueous ammonia may also contain electrolytes, e.g. potassium chloride and ammonium sulphate. The products may be moulded and formed into films. The products may be saporified by treatment with alkalis, e.g. alkali metal hydroxides and carbonates and alkaline earth metal oxides, hydroxides and carbonates, to give products suitable for use as soil-improving agents, flocculating agents, textile treating agents and thickening agents.
