Abstract

Picryl sulphone for use in an electric blasting initiator is prepared in a two-step process from picryl chloride. In the first step picryl chloride is reacted with a source of sulphur, such as sodium thiosulphate, sodium disulphide, or thiourea, to produce picryl sulphide. The picryl sulphide is then oxidized by a nitric acidchromic acid mixture to produce a pale yellow precipitate. The precipitate is then filtrated and yields picryl sulphone.
