Abstract

574,166. Blasting detonators. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO., E. I. April 7, 1941, No. 4599. Convention date, April 6, 1940. [Classes 9 (i) and 9(ii)] A blasting detonator is provided with a primary detonating composition, e.g. lead azide or fulminate, the sensitiveness of which to shock has been reduced by blending it with a small percentage of a water insoluble metal soap, such as calcium, aluminium or magnesium stearate or aluminium oleate. The base charge which may be of tetryl may also be blended with a low percentage of calcium stearate so that it can be worked easily. The percentage of metal soap ranges from 0.5 per cent to 5 per cent. In the detonator, shown in Fig. 3, the base charge 2 is contained in a metal case 1 and the blended detonating mixture 3 is superposed, and a firing charge 4 superposed on this. The charge 4 may be fired by a slow fuze, an electric current or, for a delay action, by a filament 9 through a delay carrier 13 perforated at 14 to receive the slow-burning powder. In a modification, Fig. 4, the blended detonating mixture 3 is enclosed in a cavity in the base charge 2 which is also blended with water-insoluble metallic soap.
