Abstract

690,616. Ammunition projectiles. BREVETS AERO-MECANIQUES SOC. ANON. Nov. 8, 1949 [March 29, 1949], No. 28621/49. Classes 9(i) and 9(ii) Projectiles having a hollow body 1 closed at the front by a fuze 2 provided with a detonator 3, contains an incendiary charge 4 producing a blast effect, with an axial recess 5 containing a charge 6 of explosive, e.g. trinitrotoluol or trotyl, with a velocity of explosion greater than 100 ms. per sec. The recess 5 may be punched or drilled in the incendiary charge and may be' enlarged near the forward end of the shell to accommodate the detonator. The dimensions of the recess are preferably such that the weight of the incendiary charge is twice the weight of the explosive: The incendiary composition is such that deflagration is accompanied by the production of a large volume of gas. The composition may be a powdered metal, e.g. aluminium, magnesium or iron mixed with an oxygen carrier, e.g. barium or strontium nitrate, the proportions by weight being 38 per cent magnesium, 7 per cent aluminium and 55 per cent barium nitrate. A binder such as resin in solution (colophony) may be added. Metal powder, e.g. 15 per cent aluminium or magnesium, may be incorporated in the explosive. Specification 635,155 is referred to.
