Abstract

1396279 Projectiles C S CROSS 26 Jan 1966 3589/66 Heading F3A A projectile comprises a steel or iron hollow body 12 enclosing a cylindrical jacket 13 of high explosive. A removable plastic or metal canister 15, reinforced by a liner 16 within the jacket 13, contains smoke screen material in the form of white phosphorus 14. Upon detonation of the projectile the implosive effect of the high explosive upon the phosphorus ignites the phosphorus and causes substantially all the smoke to stay near the ground. The projectile nose 17 contains a fuze 11 responsive to impact, proximity or time. The canister 15 is removable from the projectile and is replaceable by canisters containing agents capable of producing coloured smoke, incendiary, luminescent or illuminating effects.
