Abstract
940,705. Hollow charges. BOFORS A. B. Feb. 22, 1961 [Feb. 23, 1960], No. 6493/61. Heading F3A. A hollow charge comprises an explosive 1, such as T.N.T., hexogen, penthrite or suitable mixtures of these, a conical liner 3 of copper, iron or zinc and a frusto-conical ring 4 of greater conicity than the liner and made of magnesium, an alloy of magnesium or an incendiary composition. According to the invention, on detonation of the charge 1 a jet is formed from the surface layers of liner 3 and this is followed by a pellet, the forward part of which is composed of the material of the ring 4 and metal from the base of the conical liner. In use against armour plating a hole is made by the jet and into this hole is injected the material of ring 4, which in the case of magnesium burns behind the plate. The material of the ring is chosen depending on what effect is required after penetration, i.e. a pressure, incendiary or poisonous effect. In Fig. 3 the ring 4 and liner 3 are separated by a supporting ring 5 made of copper, iron or zinc.
