Abstract

912,090. Grenades. LEITNER, K. April 15, 1959 [April 21, 1958], No. 12720/59. Class 9 (1). A hand grenade has a casing 1 of thermoplastic material, such as polyethylene or rubber, covering a concrete jacket 2 housing the explosive charge 6 which is packed around a detonator 5. Into the detonator extends a metal tube 3 containing a delay composition 4. The charge 6 is preferably a plastic explosive. A percussion cap 7 is housed in the outer end of the tube 3 and the grenade is closed by a cap 8 of the thermoplastic material. Iron splinters or balls may be embedded in the concrete. In a modification to be discharged from mortars, the whole of the space within the concrete is occupied by the explosive charge. The concrete may be replaced by other materials, which may be smoke-producing or of an incendiary nature, e.g. phosphorus.
