Abstract
935,707. Fragmentation type missiles. AEROJET-GENERAL CORPORATION. Nov. 11, 1960, No. 38904/60. Class 9 (1). A fragmentation type missile, e.g. a missile warhead, bomb or grenade, includes a plurality of slugs coated with a material exhibiting pyrogenic properties upon frictional impact with a target. The missile shell 1 has an outer casing 2 and an inner casing 4 between which is a sheath of presized steel slugs 3. Both casings are preferably composed of a fibre glass reinforced plastic resin, such as an epoxy resin, and the steel slugs 3 are preferably cemented to each other and to the casings by means of a plastic resin 6, such as an epoxy resin. Each slug 3 is provided with a coating 5 of a pyrogenic material which is ignited by the friction developed between the slug and the target. Metals or alloys which can be tightly bonded to the slugs are preferred, examples being Al, Mg, Zr, Ti metals and Mg-Ti, Al-Ti, Al-Mg, Al-Zr, Al-Zr-Mg alloys. The interior of the casing 4 is filled with a suitable high explosive in the usual manner.
