Abstract
737,348. Ammunition projectiles. DONNER, H. O. Aug. 11, 1953 [April 18, 1953], No. 22161/53. Class 9(1). A fin-stabilised projectile for discharge from smooth bore mortars has a metal body 1 filled with explosive to be ignited by a nose fuze 2 and a tail 3 supporting fins 4 and closed by a thrust member 5. The member 5, which accommodates a propellant cartridge, has radial passages 8 aligned with openings 81 in an obturating member 9, which is arranged to transmit the propellant thrust to the member 5. Fitted into the rear of the thrust member is an element 7 which houses the igniter for the propellant and is surrounded by an extension 91 of the obturator. The maximum diameter of the obturator is greater than the overall diameter of the fins and has grooves 12 separating bearing surfaces 11 which engage the bore of the mortar. Gas accumulating in the annular chamber 10 within the extension forces the obturator away from the projectile after it leaves the barrel.
