Abstract

594,516. Projectiles. BURNEY, SIR C. D. Sept. 4, 1940, No. 6803/42. Divided out of 594,513. [Class 9 (i)] A gun-fired projectile is made with an explosive thick-walled front portion 1 carrying the driving band 2 in advance of the shell base proper and with a hollow rear portion 3 extending rearwardly from the shell base in the form of a thin-walled casing which is subjected on firing to balanced internal and external pressures, whereby the casing wall is towed by the front portion and is relieved of heavy forces for accelerating the forward portion. The hollow rear casing may be used to accommodate fuzes, parachute flares, parachute barrage wires, or mines. As shown, the rear end of the casing 3 is fitted with a nozzle 33 and a guiding tail comprising vanes 34 and a ring 35. The nozzle 33 allows the propellent gases of the gun to enter the casing to balance the pressures. Specifications 594,513, 594,514 and 594,515 are referredto.
