815,045 Hollow charge projectiles. ANSTALT FUR DIE ENTWICKLUNG VON ERFINDUNGEN UND GEWERBLICHEN ANWENDUNGEN ENERGA. Aug. 27, 1957 [Sept. 12, 1956(2)], No. 27014/57. Class 9(1) A hollow charge projectile, fin-stabilized and of ogival shape at both ends, is closed at the forward end by an ogival ballistic cap. This cap has a hollow rear portion 2b and a solid front portion 2a through which extends an axial passage 2c housing a nose percussion fuze 1. Extending through the passage 2c is a sleeve 4 containing an explosive column 3a, 3b. The projectile casing 5, which is provided with a driving band 6, houses a charge 7 with a conical metal liner 8 beyond the vertex of which a detonator (not shown) is embedded in the charge 7. The cap 2a, 2b may be made in one piece of mild steel or brass, or may be in two separate parts, Fig. 3, the part 2a being of lead or lead alloy and the part 2b, which is of stronger material has a shoulder 14 to engage the part 2a. A sleeve 16 carrying the fuze 1 and passing through the part 2a is screwed into an extension 15 of the part 2b to hold the parts together. In Fig. 1, the extension 3b of the explosive column is of reduced diameter and passes through a centring element 11. The part 2a may have an insulating covering which carries the fuze and is crimped or otherwise secured to the part 2b. The explosive column may be omitted, the fuze then including a primer to transmit combustion to the detonator. The explosive 3a, 3b may be penthrite or hexogen. The part 2a may contain a smoke-producing, incendiary or toxic charge.
