Abstract
736,250. Ammunition projectiles and fuzes therefor. BROMBRINI PARODI-DELFINO SOC. PER AZIONI. May 15, 1953 [July 9, 1952], No. 13635/53. Class 9(1) The projectile shown in Fig. 1 has a casing 1 containing an incendiary charge 2 and a hollow explosive charge 3. Axially arranged in the hollow charge is a metal holder 4 containing a detonating charge 6 held in place by a plug 5. Resting on the holder 4 is a flash-tube 7 closed at the forward end by a cap 8. A percussion cap mounted in the nose of the shell comprises a metal cup 9 containing a sensitive charge 10 resting on an igniter charge 11 which in turn is supported by a disc 12. The casing 1 is formed by a stamping operation from a steel block and grooved to receive a driving band 13, the outer diameter of the casing being nearly constant, while the inner diameter tapers so that the casing is thicker towards the base. The detonator is pressed into the bursting charge 3, which, like the incendiary charge 2, is pre-cas before insertion into the shell. After insertion of the detonator, the forward end of the shell i shaped to form the nose and secure the flash tube in position. The casing is then milled to receive the percussion cap 9-10, the disc 12 i then inserted and the igniter charge 11 place( in position before forcing in the percussion cap The cap filling 10 is compressed and lacquered and covered by a disc of lead, tin or paper. On impact the percussion cap 9-10 ignites the charge 11 and the flash passes through the tube 7 to initiate the detonator, which, in turn, initiates the bursting charge 3 and incendiary mixture 2 In a modification, the cavity in the explosive charge 3 is omitted, so that the charges 2, may be larger. In a further modification an armour piercing head of hardened steel is pro vided, the nose ignition assembly being com pressed within a holder which is inserted in the head and held in position by chamfering the casing.
