Abstract

977,022. Projectile fuzes. BOFORS A B. March 10, 1961 [April 2, 1960], No. 8846/61. Heading F3A. A projectile fuze provided with self-destruction means and operating on direct or oblique impact has a two-part casing 1, 2 arranged to separate on oblique impact as in Specification 782,257, a frictionally ignited composition 21 being placed in the zone of separation near a channel 20 which can conduct flash from the composition to a detonator 17 at the rear of the fuze. An extension of the part 2 is screwed into the nose part 1 and houses a sleeve supporting a combustible plug, which separates a push-rod 10 from a spring-stressed striker 12 locked in position by upset portions 14 of a surrounding sleeve 15. A firing pin integral with the striker extends into a rotor 16 housing the detonator 17. A flash passage 20 leads from the rotor 16 to a channel housing a delay composition 19. On firing a projectile into which the fuze has been screwed, a primer 5, housed in a bore parallel to the push-rod 10, sets back against its supporting spring 6 and hits a pin 7, the resultant-flash passing through a channel 8 to ignite the plug 11 and also ignites the delay 19. When the plug 11 has burnt away and the projectile decelerates, the spring 13 forces the striker 12 against the rod, so releasing the rotor and arming the fuze for operation on impact, the rotor when freed having rotated due to centrifugal force until the detonator is aligned with the firing pin. If impact does not occur within a given time, the delay 19 fires the detonator 17. If impact is oblique, the nose 1 breaks off in the region of packing 4 and the composition 21 ignites. The flash therefrom breaks through the wall of the passage 20 arid fires the detonator 17.
