Abstract
579,649. Projectiles. BURNEY, SIR C. D. May 7, 1942, No. 6172. [Class 9(i)] Relates to disruptive projectiles of the kind wherein the H.E. charge is cupped at its front end to produce a convergent wave of detonation when it is exploded at a short distance from the surface of impact. In order that such projectiles may be projected with higher velocities while retaining ballistic stability, the cupped H.E. charge a is located in a central cylindrical portion with concavo-convex ends g, h; the front portion b of the projectile is a thin.walled contour casing possessing only sufficient rigidity to cause the impact fuze i to operate on impact before the casing is crushed ; and the rear portion comprises a streamlined hollow tail c with tubular vaned extension d. The tail is multi-perforated at l so that the propellant gases may enter it and set up a balanced pressure, whereby the tail may be made of thin material. The vanes e may be straight or helical and have a ring f around their rear ends. The tail may comprise a rocket charge.
