Abstract
676,368. Rocket propulsion. BRODEN, E. W., NORDSTROM, S. H., and NORDSTROM, I. T. M. May 16, 1949. [May 18, 1948] No. 13016/49. Class 9 (ii). A rocket 1 has a combustion chamber 2 from which the gases produced on combustion of the propellant are exhausted through a Laval nozzle 3. Between the chamber 2 and the nozzle is placed a ring 4 provided with inclined vanes and within the ring is a streamlined body 5. Thus the ring 4 combined with the body 5 form a turbine wheel fixed in the projectile so that the gases are deflected and cause the projectile to rotate. In a modification the ring 4 and the body 5 are placed within the nozzle exit. The outer ends of the inclined vanes are attached to the inside wall of the nozzle or combustion chamber as by welding or by fixing in splines.
