Abstract

824,759. Jet-propulsion plant. SOC. FINANCIERE D'EXPANSION COMMERCIAL ET INDUSTRIELLE SOC. ANON. SFINDEX. April 9, 1958 [April 10, 1957], No. 11182/58. Class 110 (3). [Also in Group XXI] A supersonic gun-launched projectile carries an auxiliary propellant, which may be a liquid or compressed gas and becomes operative after launching has taken place, the propellant being ignited outside the body 1 of the projectile in the locality of its largest cross-section and forward of the centre of gravity and the gases produced expand directly into the air layer surrounding the body. The propellant 10 escapes through openings 9 which before firing, are closed either by the forward end of the cartridge case 7 or as shown in Fig. 3, by an annular primer 3. Primer 3 is ignited either by the hot gases from the cartridge or by friction against the gun-barrel and in turn ignites the auxiliary propellant. It is stated that this produces a thrust against the surface of the shock wave associated with the projectile.
