Abstract

Weapon comprises a firing tube for accepting and aiming shells fitted with an integral velocity booster cartridge and with a support to fit the rear of the firing tube. The firing tube is strong enough to withstand radial pressures released via the walls of the booster pack, which are of semi-open construction. Prod. may be carried aimed and fired either manually or with supporting devices, opt. including automatic aiming and aim correction controls. The shell may include gyrostabilisers and other flight controls. As a weapon system it combines the merits of a recoil-less cannon and of a rocket launcher, by firing a shell at a supersonic speed with some in-flight acceleration without submitting the launching personnel to a heavy recoil or a high nozzle crack (noise) and without much tell-tale evidence of the firing position. The barrel construction provides a combination of durability, strength and light wt. The form of the explosive charge minimisers pressure differentials during acceleration within the firing tube, thus avoiding serious stress differentials in the tube and providing reproducible shell flight characteristics.
