Abstract
952,928. Self-propelled rifle grenades and launchers therefor. BREVETS AERO-MECANIQUES S.A. April 26, 1961 [May 5, 1960], No. 15133/61. Headings F3A and F3C. A projectile to be fired from a firearm barrel, such as a rifle grenade, comprises a rocket motor 3 and nozzles 8 which initially, via openings in a muzzle brake 7, allow some of the propelling gases from a launching cartridge to escape to the atmosphere thereby providing a torque which rotates the projectile. According to the invention the torque is maintained during flight by the action of propelling gases from motor 3. A clearance as shown by dotted lines at 9 may be provided to permit continuous access of the cartridge gases to nozzles 8 while tail tube 4 disengages from barrel 1. Various embodiments are described including placing nozzles 8 forward of muzzle brake 7 and replacing the brake 7 by an extension into which the tail tube 4 may be fitted, the nozzles 8 in this case being covered during the initial movement of the projectile. Also the nozzles may be suitably shaped to cooperate with external deflectors which may or may not form part of the tail unit 6. The pitch and shape of the deflectors and/or tail unit may be chosen to maintain, increase or decrease the initial nozzle-produced speed of rotation. Application of the invention to hollow charge projectiles is mentioned and also the use of a launching cartridge of increased power.
