Abstract

1,108,382. Self-propelled missiles and launchers therefor. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORPORATION. 3 Dec., 1965 [10 Dec., 1964], No. 51366/65. Heading F3A. A self-propelled missile comprises a cylindrical rocket motor casing 10 to which is attached a conical head 11 and a nozzle 12, the ratio of the length L of casing 10 to its diameter d being between 20 and 50, the projectile having a full-weight to empty-weight ratio of at least 2À5; and the propellant charge 16 having a total burning time of not more than 1À0 seconds. The casing 10 is preferably made of thin metal alloy and the head 11 of light metal or plastics, such as nylon. The casing 10 is united to the head 11 by a frusto-conical extension 13 housing an electric igniter 14 for the propellant 16. A tapered bore 17 extending through the propellant widens towards the nozzle 12 and channel-section inhibitor shields 18, 19 having their flanges embedded in the propellant are diametrically opposed within the bore (Fig. 3a). These shields may be made of aluminium foil. To produce spin, the nozzle 12 is provided with vanes (12b) projecting into the gas stream. Launching.-The missiles may be housed in a battery of tubes (25), which may be made of cardboard or plastics, held together by bands (26) and the missiles may be launched simultaneously from these tubes. A plurality of these batteries may be stored in magazines (27), (28) mounted on aiming and launching mechanism (29).
