Abstract
590,177. Projectiles. HYDRAN PRODUCTS, Ltd., and MOTLEY, L. July 17, 1944, No. 13606. [Classes 9 (i) and 9 (ii)] A rocket projectile is launched and initially propelled by a combustible such as cordite which contains its own oxygen and is carried by the projectile and subsequently by the combustion of fuel with the ambient air. The cordite is contained in chamber 1 and the products of combustion are discharged through orifices 2. The liquid fuel is contained in a surrounding chamber 3 and is heated by the combustion of the cordite. A valve 9 allows the fuel to pass to the main chamber 1 by a narow gauge passage 8 when the pressure in this chamber falls due to burning out of the cordite charge. Similarly a valve 7 allows air to enter when the air pressure due to the velocity of the projectile is greater than that of the burning cordite charge. The pressure generated by combustion, of the fuel and air recloses the valve and the cycle is repeated until the fuel is exhausted. The valve 7 comprises a cone having radial slots 7b closed by flap valve members 7c. The orifices 2 are arranged to stabilize the projectile by rotation. The nose 4 may contain an explosive charge. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 579,807.
