Abstract

593,403. Jet - propulsion plant. WHITTLE, F. Dec. 1, 1941, No. 15477. [Class 110 (iii)] In a jet-propulsion plant for aircraft, a number of similar gas turbine units, each comprising a double-entried centrifugal compressor 1, a ring of combustion chambers 4 and a turbine wheel 5 driving the air-compressor only, are arranged about a central shaft 9 which is driven by a turbine wheel 7 receiving the exhausts of all the units, the wheel 7 driving a pre-compressor 10 which delivers air into the chamber 11. In one modification, the precompressor is driven through gearing between the shaft 9 and all the units and the turbine wheel 7 may be omitted. In another, an additional pre-compressor driven at a lower speed is located in front and part of the air delivered by this pre-compressor passes, through an annular passage surrounding the gas turbine units, direct to the propulsion jet.
