Abstract

586,553. Gas turbines. BAUMANN, K., and METROPOLITAN-VICKERS ELECTRICAL CO., Ltd. Nov. 6, 1941, No. 14336. [Class 110 (iii)] The contra-rotational elements, 9, 10, Fig. 3, of an air-compressor .are driven by contrarotational turbine elements I, II radially outside the compressor. The number of turbine blade rings is less than the number of compressor blade rings. The compressor carries the turbine discs by means of cylindrical parts 13, 14. The air is delivered to a swan-neck combustion chamber and the turbine exhaust passes to an annular discharge 37 which, merges into a propulsion jet. Air is received by a forwardly directed entrance 39 and reaches the air-compressor by way of a number of pipes 40 of stream-line section which cross the discharge 37. Another ring of blades may be carried at the end of a cylindrical extension of the shrouding of the blade ring I and a further ring may be carried by a cylindrical extension of the foundation ring of the blades II. Two compressors may be arranged in series, each being driven by pairs of turbine blades, as shown in Fig. 3, in series. Three compressors may be arranged in series, adjacent compressor rotors being driven by contra-rotational turbine pairs with single turbine blade rings on the end compressor rotors co-operating with fixed guide rings. The turbine elements I. II, Fig. 3, may carry externally directed air blades. Specifications 586,551, 586,552 and 586,560 are referred to.
