Abstract
619,232. Gas turbines. LOMBARD, A. A. June 24, 1946, Nos. 18889 and 29570. [Class 110 (iii)] In a gas turbine plant of the type having an air compressor driven through a shaft by a gas turbine arranged coaxially with the shaft and compressor, and in which the combustion system comprises a number of flame tubes and at least one air casing, the combustion chambers or flame tubes are arranged with their axes skewed relative to the shaft axis so that they lie in a helical manner around the shaft. The said axes are preferably rectilinear, but may be of helical form. Air from a two-stage centrifugal compressor leaves a diffuser chamber 20 through stub pipes 26 in a substantially tangential direction and flows through helically disposed combustion chambers 21 to a gas turbine 14. Individual combustion chambers may be replaced by an annular air-casing housing helically disposed flame tubes, and the compressor may then be of the axial-flow type.
