Abstract

669,357. Centrifugal compressors. ROLLSROYCE, Ltd. June 22, 1950. [May 4, 1949] No. 11948/49. Class 110(i). In a centrifugal compressor of the kind in which the gas leaves the impeller in a radial direction and flows through a delivery passage to a diffuser, the diffuser comprises a number of channels through which the gas flows substantially without any radial component of velocity, the delivery passage or the diffuser cnannels or both are arranged to eliminate wholly or partly the circumferential component of velocity. Air delivered by the impeller 10 of a supercharger passes through an annular passage 16 which converts the radial component of velocity into an axial one substantially without diffusion. Passage 16 is defined by two annular casing parts 13, . 15. Diffusion occurs in channels 18 which are curved to eliminate swirl and are defined by annular walls 12a, 20 and lands 12b. Guide vanes 21, carried by tablets 22 secured in recesses in the wall 12a may be provided. Sheet metal delivery ducts 23 extend axially from an annular plate 24 and may be divergent to provide further diffusion. The compressor may form part of a gas turbine plant.
