Abstract

941,344. Turbines. R. BIRMANN. Nov. 6, 1961, No. 39666/61. Heading F1T. A centripetal elastic fluid turbine has the inlet edges of the blades rounded and the blade passages shaped so as to provide acceleration faces in the direction of flow, radial inward components of which at least balance the centrifugal forces acting outward on the flow. The blades 57 are highly bulbous at their entrance edges 120 to provide shockless flow entrance throughout a large range of inlet angles. The hollows regions 128 within the blades are open to the clearance between the blades 57 and the housing 20 and reduce leakage between the blade passages. Cooling air from a compressor mounted on the shaft 58 may be supplied through passages 130. The turbine housing is formed of prestressed ceramic material 20, 22 surrounded by a metal cylinder 12. The driving gases enter a whirl chamber 24 through tangential nozzles (not shown) and exhaust through a vaneless annular diffuser 32 which enables the turbine exit pressure to be sub-atmospheric.
