Abstract

958,842. Ducted fan lift engines. M.A.N.- TURBOMOTOREN G.m.b.H. July 12, 1961 [July 13, 1960], No. 25325/61. Headings F1G, F1J, F1L and F1T. A ducted fan lift aircraft engine for vertical take-off and landing including a fan rotor provided with turbine blades on its periphery, comprises a combustion chamber means supplying power gases to the turbine blades, a generally cylindrical housing arranged co-axially with the fan rotor to serve as a distributer housing for combustion and mixing air which is supplied to the combustion chamber means by a highspeed rotary compressor and a plurality of tubes leading radially or obliquely from the housing and opening into an annular duct which extends over the entire turbine blade ring. Compressed air is supplied through a distributer 23 to a number of air jacketed combustion chambers 25 through openings 28. Fuel is supplied by pump 30 through an annular pipe 31 to burners 32. Combustion products pass through the annular duct 27 to the guide vanes 15a, 151a and turbine blades 15, 151 mounted on the fan blades 14, 141. The two rotors 13, 131 are journalled on a stub shaft 16 and synchronised by gears 17, 19, 20 and 21. In a modification, Fig. 3, the fuel is sprayed into a combustion chamber 41 by a rotary atomiser 47 driven by gears 48, 49, 50 from the rotor discs 33a. Air passes through openings 51 into mixing tubes 45 leading to an annular duct 44. The duct 44 supplies working fluid, to guide vanes 35a, 35<SP>1</SP>a and to turbine blades 35, 351 mounted on a rotor made of two parts 33a, 33b. The fan blades 34 are also made in two parts.
