(Granted under the act of March 3, 1883, as
amended April 30, 1928; 370 O. G. 757) The invention described herein may be manufactured and used by or for the Government for governmental purposes Without the payment to us of any royalty thereon.
This invention relates to primer tubes and particularly those designed for insertion in the propellent charge for ammunition.
Previously metallic primers have been used containing flash holes for directing the ignition into the charge. In order to retain the primer charge an inner sleeve Was provided to cover the holes, the sleeve being destructible on ignition of the primer. The holes were further sealed off against external foreign matter and the sleeve sealed to the tube by patches of asphaltum. The tubes have for the most part been constructed of copper or other materials now considered strategic and subject to conservation measures. Furthermore, the tubes were weighty and took up space which could be employed to better advantage.
It is therefore an object of this invention to provide a primer tube which will simplify manufacture, conserve on strategic materials and reduce waste space in a propellent charge.
This and other objects are attained by providing a tube which is fabricated of propellent charge material,
The specific nature of the invention as well as other objects and advantages thereof will clear- 1y appear from a description of a, preferred embodiment as shown in the accompanying drawings in which:
Fig. 1 is a View showing in elevation a primer tube according to the invention located within the propellant of part of a cartridge shown in section,
Fig. 2 is a section taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings by characters of reference there is shown a tube I constructed by molding, extrusion or othersuitabl process from smokeless powder or other suitable propellant, and loaded with black powder 2 or other suitable igniting charge. A container 3 for holding a primer charge is inserted in one end of the tube and secured in any desirable manner, for instance by simple friction. The tube may, if desired be provided with flash holes, but this would complicate manufacture since these would have to be closed off to retain the primer charge. In use the primer tube I is located within a propellant 5 of the casing 6 of a, cartridge.
In the preferred embodiment shownno flash holes and no covering therefor are necessary, the tube is simply constructed by an extrusion or molding process, the article is light in weight, leaves no residue and more space is available for the propellent charge.
We claim:
1. Means for propelling a projectile comprising a propellent charge, a primer tube fabricated of propellent charge material in said propellent charge, an igniting charge in said tube, and a primer charge at one end of said primer tube for igniting the igniting charge in said primer tube.
2. Means for propelling a projectile comprising a propellent charge, a, primer tube fabricated of smokeless powder composition, an igniting charge in said tube, and a primer charge at one end of said tube for igniting the igniting charge in said tube.
