Abstract

970,395. Armour-piercing projectiles. J. O. BJORKLUND, J. A. D. ELDH, and G. V. GUSTAFSSON. April 5, 1961 [April 5, 1960; Sept. 26, 1960], No. 12158/61. Heading F3A. In an armour-piercing projectile having a main charge 4 and a primer charge 3 contained in the same casing 1, the charges are separated by a partition wall 6 of explosively-inert material whose thickness diminishes from its centre towards the edges thereof adjacent the casing. The partition 6 may be made wholly of a metal such as iron, steel or brass or comprise a metal casing containing a material such as wood or synthetic resin. The preferred shape of the partition is conical or frusto-conical and its cross-sectional shape is such that the peri-' phery of the base abuts the projectile casing. In hollow-charge projectiles as shown in Fig. 1, the apex of the cone projects into the primer charge 3 and the cone may also have an axial flash passage if the projectile is fitted with a nose percussion fuze. A further embodiment discloses use of the partition wall in a shell having a main charge of the plastic type. In this case the apex of the wall is forwardly facing and projects into the main charge.
