Abstract

144,736. Hammond, J. H. Dec. 21, 1914, [Convention date]. Projectiles.-Consists in making projectiles with an exothermic non-explosive charge T and an explosive charge E; a charge H of poisonous material such as hydrocyanic acid may be added. The exothermic charge, for example of the substance known commercially under the Trade Mark " Thermit," is set alight at the moment the shell is discharged from the gun, for example by one, or more, concussion fuses C which ignite a priming charge I of barium peroxide and aluminium. The ignition is transmitted from this charge to the exothermic charge directly or through a charge U of red oxide of iron and aluminium contained in a tube L and flat hollow disks J of paper or pasteboard. The explosive charge E, for example of trinitrotoluene, is detonated by a percussion fuse F after the projectile has penetrated the target and the exothermic reaction has had time to be completed. The explosion scatters the exothermic charge with incendiary effects and also the poisonous charge when one is used. Shrapnel bullets coated with refractory materials may be added to the exothermic charge, and the chamber containing this charge is lined and divided from the adjacent chamber by refractory heat-insulating material M.
