Abstract

1,253,048. Detonators. DYNAMIT NOBEL A.G. 2 Dec., 1968 [1 Dec., 1967], No. 57166/68. Heading F3A. A detonator comprises an outer case 1 which is capable of being decomposed by sea water after a predetermined time to render the detonator harmless, comprises an outer casing 1 of magnesium, or, an alloy thereof in which the magnesium is a major constituent. A container 3 for a primary charge 4 is formed of a metal or alloy of greater standard electrode potential than the material of the casing 1, whereby decomposition of the casing 1 is accelerated by electrolytic degradation once the sea water has broken through the outer casing. The container 3 is formed of nickel or nickel-plated copper, and the magnesium alloy of the case 1 is a secondary or tertiary alloy with one or two of silicon, bismuth, zinc and calcium. An electric fuse 2 is provided to ignite the primary charge. The primary charge is lead azide and the secondary charge 5 is tetryl.
