Abstract
1,253,049. Detonators. DYNAMIT NOBEL A.G. 2 Dec., 1968 [1 Dec., 1967], No. 9445/71. Divided out of 1,253,048. Heading F3A. A detonator which is destroyed by the action of sea water after a predetermined time, comprises an outer casing 1 formed from an elemental metal or alloy capable of being decomposed by sea water within a predetermined time range, and at least one member 8 formed from an elemental metal or alloy having a standard electrode potential greater than that of the metal or alloy of the outer casing, the casing 1 and member 8 being electrically connected together whereby destruction of the casing is assisted by electrolytic degradation when the detonator is immersed in sea water. A container 3 for a primary charge 4 may also be formed of an elemental metal or alloy of greater standard electrode potential than the metal or alloy of the casing. The container 3 and member 8 can be formed of nickel or nickel-plated copper, and the casing 1 can be formed of magnesium or a secondary or ternary alloy thereof with one or two of silicon, bismuth, zinc and calcium. An electric primer 2 serves to ignite the primary charge 4. The primary charge 4 is lead azide and the secondary charge 5 is tetryl.
