. the county of Schuylkill and State of Pen lsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements 1n Composltions for Detonators, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates particularly to an improvement in compositions used for detonating explosive charges, such as dynamite or gelatin.
We have discovered that hexanitrodiphenylamine when mixed with such primary detonating compounds as mercury fulminate or lead azide, and then pressed into shells which are used for blasting caps, forms a powerful detonating composition, for when the composition is ignited, as by means of a safety fuse, it .detonates violently and with sufficient power to causethe detonation of dynamite. A suitable mixture is 90 parts mercury fulminate and 10 parts hexanitrodiphenylamine, or 90 parts lead azide and 10 parts hexanitrodiphenylamine.
Hexanitrodiphenylamine may also be used as the main charge ofthe blasting cap or electric blasting cap, with a primary detonating composition such as lead azide, mercury fulminate or mercury fulminate mixed with potassium chlorate, or other primary detonating composition. As an example, six grains of hexanitrodiphenylamine may be loaded into a shell such as is used for blasting caps and pressed in place; seven grains of a mixture of 90 parts mercury fulminate and 10 parts potassium chlorate may be placed on top of the hexanitrodiphenylamine and pressed in place; and the chargemay then be covered with an inverted capsule, if desired. The blasting caps so made can be ignited by the flame from a safety fuse in the usual way, and will detonate with great violence and sufficient power to cause the detonation of dynamite.
While wehave given specific examples of the use of hexanitrodiphenylamine in detonator compositions, it is to be understood that our'invention is not limited toany par- .ticular detonator composition nor to any specific methods of,use in blastin or other Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Feb, 21, 1922. Application filed September as, 1920. Serial No. 412,812.

3. A blasting cap charge comprising a primary detonating compound and hexanitrodiphenylamine.
4. A blasting cap charge comprising mercury fulminate and hexanitrodiphenylamine.
5. A blasting cap charge comprising mercury fulminate 90 parts and hexanitrodiphenylamine 10 parts.
6. A detonating charge consisting of hexanitrodiphenylamine and a primary detonatin compound and potassium chlorate.
A primer composition for explosives comprising hexanitrodiphenylamine.
8. A primer composition comprising hexanitrodiphenylamine and a primary detonating compound. I

10. A detonator composition for explosives comprising a main charge of hexanitrodiphenylamine and a primer'cont-aining fulminate of mercury.
11. A detonating composition for explosives comprising: a'main charge of hexanitrodiphenylamine-and a primer contalning a mixture of fulmina-te of mercury and potassium chlorate.
'12. A detonating composition for explosives comprising a main charge of hexamtrodiphenylamine with a primer, consisting of a mixture of hexanitrodiphenylamine, potassium chlorate and fulminate'of mercury.
13. A detonator composition for explosives comprising hexanitrodiphenylamine, fu'lminate of mercury and potassium ch lorate.
14. A primer composition for explosives comprising hexanitrodiphenylamine, fulminate of mercury and potassium chlorate.
