Abstract
1,178,307. Sterile keratinous articles. SEMI S.A. 27 Jan., 1967 [1 Feb., 1966], No. 4291/67. Heading A5E. A process for the production of an autosterile article containing keratin, comprises disrupting disulphide or cystine bonds of the keratin to provide sulphdryl groups by treating the article with a solution of ammonium thioglycollate, sodium lauryl sulphate, sodium sulphide, tannin, a chromium or aluminium salt, ammonium hydroxide, or alkali metal or alkaline earth metal hydroxide, and substituting metal ions for the hydrogen ions of the sulphydryl groups, the metal being Ag, Bi, Cu or Hg, by treating with a solution of a salt of the said metal. The treatment with the metal salt may comprise conversion into metal hydroxide and/or oxide by the action of an alkaline solution, followed by reduction (e.g. with formaldehyde) or use of a peroxide. Articles specified are brushes and fabrics used as dressings.
