Abstract
A lotion for the cold permanent waving of hair comprises an aqueous solution of a water-soluble mercaptan, e.g. thioglycollic acid, thioglycerol, thiosorbitol or mercaptopropionic acid, and ammonium carbonate and/or ammonium bicarbonate, the solution having been brought to a pH of 7.7 to 9.0 with ammonia. The solution preferably contains 0.4-1.0 M mercaptan and sufficient carbonate to provide a CO3 molarity of between 0.25 and saturation. The solution is preferably prepared by raising the pH of an aqueous thioglycollic acid solution to 5-7 by the addition of ammonia, then adding solid ammonium bicarbonate and raising the pH to 7.7-9.0 by the addition of ammonium hydroxide, thus converting some but not all of the bicarbonate to carbonate. Wetting agents, opacifiers and perfumes may be added. Subsequent treatment of the hair with a neutralizer solution, e.g. aqueous potassium bromate, is effected.
