Abstract

In the process of the parent Specification, according to which artificial threads produced by extruding a solution of protein are hardened and then stabilized by treatment with an ionogenic cyanic compound, the threads, before, during or after the stabilizing treatment, are treated with an aqueous solution containing one or more salts of zinc, cadmium, beryllium, aluminium, zirconium or titanium. The hardening bath preferably contains sodium sulphate, formaldehyde and sulphuric acid, the ionogenic cyanic compound is preferably sodium cyanate and the preferred metal salt is zinc sulphate.
