Abstract

Freshly - extruded protein threads are hardened in a bath containing formaldehyde and one or more metal salts until the threads become resistant to the solvent or swelling action of cold water. They are then treated in a bath comprising methyl alcohol or ethyl alcohol, together with an esterification catalyst, to effect esterification of the threads, and the esterified threads are subjected to a curing treatment consisting of either a further hardening treatment in a bath containing formaldehyde and one or more metal salts or an insolubilizing treatment, i.e. a treatment to render the threads resistant to the solvent or swelling action of hot water and hot aqueous liquids. The esterification may be effected at 35-50 DEG C. and the catalyst may be sulphuric acid or ethyl or methyl sulphuric acid. The hardening bath may be one containing formaldehyde and sodium, aluminium, or magnesium sulphate and, if desired, sulphuric acid. The insolubilizing agent may be acetic anhydride, or a compound giving rise to cyanate ions, or aluminium sulphate. After treating with a cyanate, the threads are preferably submitted to a heat treatment at 60-70 DEG C. The pre-hardened threads may be knitted, woven, or otherwise formed into fabrics and then submitted to the esterification and curing treatments. The esterification liquid may contain water in a proportion not exceeding 30 per cent based on the weight of the alcohol. It may also contain a dialkyl sulphate, e.g. diethyl sulphate, e.g. in a proportion of 30 per cent based on the weight of the alcohol. The esterification liquid may be aqueous alcohol (75-80 per cent of alcohol to 25-20 per cent of water) containing 160-240 grams per litre of sulphuric acid. The pre-hardened threads may be pretreated with alcohol immediately before the esterification step. The treatment reduces the water-imbibition of the threads and gives greater fastness to dyeings. The treated threads are stable to hot acid dyebaths. In an example, threads are obtained by extruding an alkaline solution of milk casein. After hardening in formaldehyde, the threads are stretched and then further hardened in a solution of formaldehyde and sodium sulphate. The threads are esterified by treatment with ethyl alcohol and sulphuric acid, and then further hardened with a solution of formaldehyde and sodium sulphate. In another example, threads of peanut protein are treated. In other examples, the curing of the esterified threads is effected with a solution of sodium cyanate.
