884,226. Nitrogen - containing polymers. ROHM & HAAS G.m.b.H. March 28, 1960 [March 26, 1959], No. 10893/60. Addition to 883,555. Class 2(6) Nitrogen-containing macromolecular products insoluble in dilute aqueous ammonia are prepared by reacting polymethyl methacrylate or a copolymer containing a major proportion of methyl methacrylate units with an aqueous solution containing one or more primary amines under pressure at a temperature of 180‹-300‹C. to form products insoluble in dilute aqueous ammonia. In a modification of the process, a proportion of the primary amine is replaced by one or more secondary amines, the proportion being insufficient to cause the product to become soluble in dilute aqueous ammonia. The aqueous solution may also contain ammonia and electrolytes, e.g. calcium chloride or ammonium sulphate. Specified primary amines are methylamine, ethylamine, n-butylamine, n-decylamine, n-dodecylamine, n-cetylamine, n-octadecylamine, benzylamine, ethylhexylamine, cyclohexylamine and dimethylaminopropylamine; and secondary amines are dimethylamine, diethylamine, piperidine, morpholine, di-n-propylamine and di-2- ethylhexylamine. The products may be moulded and formed into films. The products may be saponified by treatment with alkali, e.g. alkali metal hydroxides and carbonates or alkaline earth metal oxides, hydroxides or carbonates, to give products suitable for use as soil improving agents.
