Abstract

Cellulosic threads, yarns and woven and non-woven fabrics are impregnated with 80-125% of their weight of an alkaline solution containing 0.5 to 2% by weight of hydrogen peroxide, and are then subjected to steam under a gauge pressure of 30-80 p.s.i. in a closed container. Sodium peroxide may be used as a source of hydrogen peroxide and the solution may also contain sodium or potassium hydroxide, sodium silicate, disodium phosphate in the presence of calcium chloride or a pyrophosphate in the presence of a sequestering agent and borax. The material may be treated in a continuous or a batch process. Examples are given relating to the bleaching of grey cotton poplin fabrics which have been desized and treated for mote-removal with successive aqueous solutions containing an enzyme and a detergent and sodium hydroxide, followed by steaming.
